Re: passports, passes, proper papers

I have found and indexed 40 requests for "passports" in the Confederate Citizens File at Footnote.com, so far. Most deal with trying to leave the Confederacy for either Mexico or abroad, but some deal with going from Texas to Louisiana, or Texas to Virginia. It's harder to search for the word "pass" due to Sabine Pass and other coastal names. I come up with a printing company receipt when I look for "passes" and a request for passes for the C. S. Marshal and his deputies to go to Galveston more easily. I don't think I indexed for anything like "proper papers."

I haven't found any actual passes for Texas. Presumably the original went with the person, and any copies from the military, if they survived, would be with military papers.

I have seen passes for slaves in other parts of the Confederacy, including one who worked at Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond.
