"Texas troubles" period

During the period after John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, there was a period where rumors and conspiracy theories abounded during the summer of 1860. This culminated into what is referred to as the “Texas Troubles”.

Now, they mention this in the “A declaration of the causes which impel the state of Texas to Secede from the federal Union” document…

“They have, through the mails and hired emissaries, sent seditious pamphlets and papers among us to stir up servile insurrection and bring blood and carnage to our firesides. They have sent hired emissaries among us to burn our towns and distribute arms and poison to our slaves for the same purpose”

Other than going by rumors, hearsay, and sensational reporting by questionable reporters/newspapers, what hard evidence has ever been brought forth that proves beyond a shadow of doubt that all this was really true?

I’m finding it real disturbing that some folk today seem to believe there really was a true conspiracy to bring forth death and destruction to Texas slave institutions, but on what proof do they base these assumptions?
