Bill

Thank you for this posting I enjoyed it very much. My Great grandfather was William Voyles of Hawpes 31st Tex Cav.

In among my great Uncles notes on the war there was written on the side border// poison springs.
Althought it was not listed as a fight Bill Voyles was in it meant Uncle Lewis had his suspicions as well.

I might explain here that my Great Grand mother married twice First to Creed Hale of the 8th Tex Battalion who had 3 sons by her, Ben Bill and Lewis. Upon his death she remarried my great grandfather Bill Voyles . This union produced my grandmother. Both she and her half brother Lewis lived with us for some years. Uncle Lewis had tought history at bailor university and was keen on the war.

One story Bill Voyles left was that at some point in Lousiana he snuck into a Yankee camp and made off with all the food he could carry, while the soldiers were occupied around the fire.

After the 31st disbanded in Houston Bill Voyles procured a mule and headed home to Greenville Tex. On the way he came upon a fellow soldier and old friend called Green Chafin laying on the side of the road too sick to travel. Bill put him on the mule and walked the 300 miles back to Greenville.

As a foot note Creed Hales younger brother Lons was Killed at Yellow Bayou in that forlorn assault there.

thank you again for the unit history
