The Texas in the Civil War Message Board

Wells' Battn; _ Surber; J.C. Sarber

I'm posting this Wells's Battn info for two reasons:

1)... SKIPPED. Footonte.com (now Fold3.com) skipped an the following Wells' Battn entry that is found in the M323-219 per the National Park Service Sailors and Soldiers's database and David Haimerl's transcription shown on my web page: http://www.bourlandcivilwar.com/WellsBattn.htm

Surber, __; A PVT in Co ’B’/Good’s Bn. May 64 return states AWOL, while on Jul 64 return listed as absent, detailed.

I think "__Surber" was probably "Israel H. Sowder, b-1850 VA, son of Adam Souder, Sowder, b-1828 VA and Leona; 1860 Cooke cen p229; Whitesboro Masonic Lodge (Co B, Bourland's Regt)"
.
2).... Sarber, J.C. ..Co G, Apr 1865, Absent without leave since Mch 24, 1865.
.
This "J.C. Sarber" was probably "Joseph Subber of a Lamar Co. militia" (that was a handwritten copy of a copy) since most of Company G was recruited from the Lamar Co TX area. ..I have not found him in a census record. ..I keep thinking the "Jacob Suber of Griffin's 20th TX Infantry, Co. A" fits here, but cannot find him in another Texas record. .. ..Keep in mind that I've found militia men who were residents of Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, etc. before and after they served in North Texas millitias.
.
Wells' Battn records are better than the Bourland Regimental records. And the Wells Battn and Bourland's Regt traversed the same general area during the last year of the War, I constantly find Wells Battn info that I post on my web page. http://www.bourlandcivilwar.com/WellsBattn.htm
.
Many problems were encountered in identifying every man in Bourland's Regt. Some of the recorded names barely resemble their Christian name. That's why I strive to find each soldier in at least one primary record that is mentioned in my Name Index. Some record keepers were over a hundred miles from the men named on their listing. ..Most records were written to detail a needed skill, such as a machinist, and the rest were barely mentioned, e.g., "J. Miller" had one record that read "Aug 1864 'sick'" even though he served from June 1863 until May 1865. ..This explains why this is so taxing.
.
MILLER, John Jehu Miller, b-1845 Macon Co NC, son of Noah; m-Marie; 1860 Grayson Co TX cen p215; 1900 Mason Co TX cen p267 (Co A, B, Bourland's Regt)
.
Again, please make sure that Fold3.com corrects the "__ Surber" entry.
