Re: Bushwacker Bill Wilson's Death
A little history - Phillip Deem who is supposed to be listed in the Bushwhacker book according to Find a Grave information. It says that Phillip Deem was killed because of his son James' bushwhacking atrocities. Phillip was found hiding in nearby Corn Creek/Hoffman cave and murdered while being escorted towards Rolla MO. It says that James was ambushed near his mothers cabin on Corn creek by Federal or militia soldiers during the war. Phillip and Mary Deem (she was my 3x great grandmother) lived there. Family history tells that her daughter, Sarah Jane Fuller also lived in Phelps Co., her husband (Alexander) was killed in the Civil War. He belonged to the Arkansas Mounted Riflemen (confederate). We had the story that Mary Deem had moved in with Sarah because they were both widows and Sarah had 2 small children. I didn't know until just recently why Mary was a widow.
Further family history tells that Sarah went to work planting corn for 50 cents a day to support the family while her mother took care of her 2 small children. One day she came home to no house as bushwhackers had burned it down because of suspicions that she was hiding confederate soldiers. Her mother and children got out and made it to a neighbors house. I don't have anything on print for this incident, just family stories. I am not sure if stories like this made it into print or if they were just too numerous. I have posted previously that I would love to see a copy of the book to read the story about the Deems along with the story of Bill Wilson.
