He was born in Nacogdoches, TX in 1837 and married in 1857. There are 5 men named "James L Smith" in the NARA records. My best guess is that he enlisted in the 17th Texas Cavalry. I do not know his date of death and there is an unlikely possibility that he was a slacker. Can someone make a positive i.d. for his unit please?
