Need help identifying military units i.e.CSA units
In Response To: Need help identifying units ()

M. Hougland,

Quoting part of your e-mail to me: "... That is excellent information for prior to the Civil War but it does not answer the question about the units participating in the Civil War. ..."
.
Answer: I surmised what you were asking and gave you my answer, including question marks, from my 200-page Name Index, that I shall post again. If they were in a Confederate military unit, I included the name of the unit. Besides, being a Commissary Sgt in Howell's Battery was quite a respectable position.

HUNTER, John F. Hunter (1821 KY-1898) m-M. Dameron; m-C. Dishman (1841 Bourland's Ranging Co, TST)
.
HUNTER, Wm. P. Hunter, b-1822 KY; ? 'Pi-se-cho-bi', Choctaw; m-Margaret Marrs/Morris; ? 1840 Jackson's Rangers; Howell's Batty, Commissary Sgt; Chambers' Inf, Co A (Fannin Co, TST) ....... Editor's note: I have this "Wm. P. Hunter" written in italics in the "1840 Jackson's Rangers" listing because a Hunter researcher thought he was in that militia because other men of this family were listed.

HUNTER, Wm., MD, Hunter (1794 VA-1847 ?IT) m1-M. Turner (Indians killed 1842) m2-1843 M. (Williams) Barnett (b-1795 SC), widow of James R. Barnett (1840 Jackson's Rangers)

My 1,046-page book in from handwritten records; it contains 240 miltia listings. ..I study the last two years of the Civil War. ..One important fact is that in a March 13, 1864 letter, Gen. H.E. McCulloch stated that he had ONLY Texas State Troops. ... That includes Howell's Battery and Chamber's Texas Infantry. ... Although it should be noted that Bourland's Regt. was accepted into the Confederacy on March 1, 1864 but the names were not recorded until March 30, 1864.
