Question Regarding Paroles

Reviewing the paroles found for men of Likens' 35th Rgt Tx Cav, it appears the Federal troops set up parole locations around the state at county seats or larger towns. Many of the regimental officers above the rank of lieutenant went to these locations, took the oath and signed paroles in July and August of 1865. Only a few enlisted men are found who signed paroles. My question: Was taking the oath optional or were certain ranks required to take the loyalty oath? Was there a penalty if they did not? Were enlisted men required to take the oath?
