Re: 1,000 Yankee prisoners in Bonham, May '64

I have countless records about federal prisoners in Texas and there is simply no mention of anyone being held at Bonham, Texas. That would have come to light years ago during my research. The only possibility there can be is if another group was transferred from Camp Ford to Bonham in addition to the Camp Groce 506 on or about August 15, 1864 to Bonham but there would be substantial records, prisoners accounts, official reports, statements of the dead and missing, etc., similar to those about Camps Ford and Groce. There simply isn't any record of it, but I will caveat my statements by saying that few people around the Hempstead/Great Houston area believed or still believe that there was a Civil War POW camp near Hempstead for Federal prisoners until I and another excellent researcher brought it to light. In short, almost anything is possible, but be careful. 1,000 prisoners would have been more than all of the POWs held at Camp Groce and substantial documentation on the subject is readily available. It took a tremendous amount of resources to guard and care for the POWs at Camp Groce and there were many escapes from there, all of which is generously documented from countless sources.
