John H. Gregory in Texas?

John H. Gregory was one of the three men who discovered the rich gold fields of Colorado in 1859, A Southern partisan, and fabulously rich, he disappeared in the Summer of 1862 in Colorado and never rejoined his family in Alabama. At about the same time the Confederate recruit camp at Mace's Hole (Colorado)was broken up and Madison's Band of CSA irregular commandos reached Colorado. Does anyone have any info on Gregory's fate or any info on his trip back to the South 18 Nov 1861- 8 February 1862 before he disappeared?
Thanks. Earl Pittman
