Re: Thomas Alexander Archer, Elmore's 20th Texas

Thomas Archer, age 28, Private, Capt. N. P. Richardson's Company, Elmore's Regiment Texas Infantry,* enlisted March 31, 1862 at Owensville by J. C. C. Brettell for the war, appointed 4th Corporal, n.d., received 25 day furlough September 15, 1864, last recorded on the November Regimental Return as furlough extended to December 1, 1864, no further records

* This company subsequently became Company D, 20th Regiment Texas Infantry

His file contains one card which notes: See P. P. [Personal Papers of J. Kellersberg, I have checked the two files for Maj. of Engineers J. Kellersberg and find no mention of Archer]

There are no company muster rolls in the records for the last year of the war, as such, we do not know of his service after December 1, 1864. There is a clue however, in that Regimental Returns are available December, 1864 through March, 1865. In as much as there appears to have been no recording of his status on these rolls, he may have been dropped from the Company Muster Rolls at the November & December 1864 Muster which could explain no report on subsequent Regimental Returns. Men were dropped from the rolls for any number or reasons, death, desertion, discharge, capture, etc.

His regiment was stationed in the vicinity of the City of Gavelston during the latter half of 1864, Company D being reported at Fort Sulakowski on Galveston Island May through December, then Batteries Bennett and Rogers Jan. through March, 1865.

Major Kellersberg was at Galveston as Chief Eng. East L. D. and it very well may have been that Tom Archer was assigned to duty constructing or repairing gun emplacements
