It was published I believe by the Southeastern Historical Society sometime in the 1970's.
When you have people like Mr. Barest, former director of the National Park Service, who can almost tell you which unit fought which unit on all the battlefields in the nation, but makes a statement as he did at the Austin Civil War Roundtable, you know there are still problems with the history. At that time he said something that many Northern people truly believe. His statement was, "There is no such thing as a Black Confederate." He refused to believe any proof put before him and said it was all forced on the Black man, therefore no such thing as a Black Confederate. If you think about that statement for a second, it is insulting and racist sterotyping to the Blacks of this country. People don't always do what is expected of them. In many cases there was a "family" attitude between slave and "master." I such cases the slave sometimes entered Confederate service without his "masters" consent and gave service beside a younger "family" member. I have the pictures of such which can be found in the book entitled: THE LAST REVIEW, The Last Reunion of the Confederate Veterans in Richmond, 1932.
For those who do not know but would be interested. JEFF DAVIS'S OWN, the story of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry in Texas is out there. That unit was commanded by A.S. Johnston, Col. and R.E. Lee, Lt. Col. fighting the natives before the war(1850's). Out of the officer ranks would come 19 generals who served both sides during the War of the Rebellion. (That by the way is the official title of the O.R.'s of the war and therefore of the Federal Government. The term Civil War is a lie. Let's not lie any longer about this conflict and call it what it was. A civil war is when two sides fight for the control of one government. The South was trying to form a new nation. Don't ever forget that, please.)
