The 1st Indiana Cavalry at the Fight of Round Hill
Helena, Ark., July 21, 1862
Editors Missouri Democrat:

Your paper of the 17th having come to hand, with fewer correspondence interesting account of the march of the army from Jacksonport to this place, I ask leave for a small space to correct some statements of which are correspondent has evidently been misinformed, as regards the fight at Round Hill on the 7th of July. Cols. Hovey and Harris, with their detachments, were accompanied by A detachment from the battery belonging to the 1st Indiana Cavalry, commanded by Lieut. Denneman, and it was he, in the place of captain potter (as stated by your correspondent), who so gallantly fought and manoeuvred his piece against such fearful odds, before Co. Wood with his reinforcements arrived; and it was here that the men belonging to the battery were wounded. Sheafner Shepherd, Bange Berry, Sergt. Heber and Lieut. Denneman were all wounded ere the reinforcements arrived, but none flinched, but continued at their post fighting to the last; and after Col. Wood came up with the cavalry and two more pieces of the battery, they fell in with him more rested till the fight was closed. Captain Potter was present, fighting bravely, but had no command of the cannon which did such good service. To Lieut. Denneman and his brave boys belong that honor, and to their skill and gallantry is in a great measure the repulsed of the enemy to be attributed before reinforcements arrived.
