As to what battle was being fought in August of 1864. On or about the 29th of July General McCook brought a Union Division of Cavalry across the Chattahoochee River to drive deep into the Confederate rear of General Hood. The first unit he hit was the 27th Texas Cavalry. On the 6th and 7th Captain Grissom of the 9th indicates that the 9th was on the edge of the battle being fought by General Armstrong's Cavalry Brigade against McCook's raid. The Ross Brigade was deeply involved in fighting this battle. On the 1st McCook captured over 1200 of the trains of several units which were loading near the railroad. Canton was one of the towns along McCook's route. McCook was cornered and almost captured, but his brigades chose to run for it and managed to overrun the 3rd Texas Cavalry that was down to 350 men. General Ross was captured for a while but a very heavy rainstorm allowed him and many others to escape. Your kin may have been taking messages or on some brigade mission when he was captured. Often the soldiers had to stop an shoe a horse, and he might have been captured then. Without actual notes listing him, we will not know the details. On the 7th there was not a specific battle involving the 9th. More can be read about the McCook Raid at the Website below.
