29th Texas at Camp Grose

I recently went through all the record cards for the 29th for its last muster roll in April 1865. According to the roll it appears as if almost no one in the regiment was at Camp Grose except the officers. The regimental staff was present and 24 company officers were present but only 40 enlisted men are present and 24 of these are noted as being detached to various quartermasters at brigade or division level, mostly as teamsters. The enlisted 16 men not listed as on detail were men who had been returned from desertion. There are 2 officers and 66 enlisted men in hospitals scattered all over the state from piedmont springs to Clarksville, Marshall and Jefferson & more. 6 enlisted men are AWOL, 1 enlisted man is in military confinement, 21 men deserted on the march. one officer and 84 men are listed as being on details all over the place, AQM in Doaksville, Clarksville, Bonham, Paris, Tyler, stewards at various hospitals, couriers, in General Maxey's escort. Most interesting is that one office and 39 men are on leave for 38 or more days. This makes me speculate as to the possiblility that the officers were attempting to cover up the wholesale departure of the men for home in May 65. I suppose they did not know at that time whether there was going to be a Confederate or Texas government to prosecute these men for desertion and for taking Confederate government property. I have not looked at the records for any of the other regiments at Camp Grose to see if they have so many men off on leave and detail as the 29th does.
