I believe it is a pen name. In England joskin is the term for a bumpkin or hick or yokel. I couldn't find a Joskins surname in the 1860 or 1870 census for Texas or in the rest of the U.S. However,the bibliography in Harold Simpson's "Hood's Texas Brigade" from 1970, lists the author as Joe Joskins and doesn't indicate that it was a pen name.
