As a member of the 3rd Texas Cavalry, this unit was under several generals until after Corinth in Oct 1862. After that time their 1st Brigade commander was General Whitfield and in late 1863 General Sul Ross. Red Jackson was a Cavalry Division Commander through the Atlanta and Tennessee Campaigns. Red trusted Ross so much that he let him report directly to General Johnston and General Hood. Ross always sent a message to Jackson concerning his messages to higher command. Stephen Kirk in his book on Ross' Brigade, follows these messages, for they often reported the location of the 4 regiments of Ross' Brigade. The 3rd, 6th, 9th and 27th Texas Cavalry Regiments. Because many of the records were lost in a trunk in Alabama that was pilfered by Union troops in a Hotel, the messages are even more important, for they are the only record of the brigades actions.
