Confusion with Texas combat unit.

I found a problem in my research and I would like to Document it so others will know.

There are several types of units in Texas, namely Calvary, Infantry, Artillery and Mounted Rifles. Due to a shortage of animal feed, many cavalry and the Mounted rifles were Dismounted. There were at least 34 regiments who were dismounted and reorganized. Infantry and artillery stayed much the same. But, as an example the 17th Infantry and 16th Dismounted Calvary were part of one Brigade. I chased the 17th and 17th Dismounted which has a colorful history in part as the 1st Consolidated.

Some Volunteer units formed after 1863, originally to guard the frontier. These units were state funded. Ranger Units were not formed until 1879, but the term ranger was used by several units well before the war. The Texas 1st Dismounted Rifles served from April 1861 to April 1862 and many joined the 4th Calvary regiment "Terry's Rangers" This 1st Mounted Rifles was a Volunteer "Ranger" units as far as I can tell, it was one of many going back to 1820.
