Re: Capt T.A. Wilson, Showalter's 4th TX Cav, AZ B

Capt. T. A. Wilson was neither "Thomas" nor a "Union sympathizer." I have conducted extensive research on Dan Showalter and those who were with him. I have found a record in Mariposa County, Calif. identifying him as "Theodore A. Wilson." Further and more significantly, when orders were sent to Major E. A. Rigg at Fort Yuma to release the prisoners held there, the communication began "As soon as this letter reached you, send Theodore A. Wilson, . . ." As to his being a Union sympathizer, all of those with Showalter when captured in Nov. 1861 gave statements in which they all claimed to be loyal men and Union in sympathy. They all also claimed to be on their way to Sonora, Mexico, to mine. Both of these statements were made in efforts to convince the Union army to release them. Major Rigg in one correspondence to his commander Col. Carleton even mentioned his disbelief of their statements. They were on the point of release at Camp Wright when further information (or evidence) led to their imprisonment at Fort Yuma. THEODORE A. WILSON is the name.
