Re: See Letters from Pvt Wm Boothe, 25 TX Cav

The 25th Texas Cavalry Dismounted on Aug. 16th 1862 was actually in two locations. Most of the regiment had become sick in Shrevesport in July. However a detachment of the healther troopers had been detached east to the railhead at Monroe where they became attached to the command of Brig Gen'l John Seldon Roane of Arkansas.

A change in command structure caused Gen'l Roane to be recalled back to Arkansas and to bring the troops in his command with him (Hindman's Telegraphs). Gen'l Roane established his headquarters at Camp White Sulphur Springs 9 mile southeast of Pine Bluff Arkansas.

Lt. "Buck" Walton of the 25th Texas Cavalry (dis) in his book "The Epitome of My Life" Stated that he was in charge of transporting supplies by steamboat from Shrevesport down the Red River to the Ouachita River. Then up the Ouachita River to Camden Arkansas then by land to Pine Bluff.

By August 16th the 25th Texas cav. had been assigned to Col Robert R Garlands Brigade of Texas Infantry for Training at Camp Holmes located on the south branch of Bayou Barthomew (now Called Nivens Creek) approximately 1 Mile from the present day Community of Sulpur Springs in Jefferson County, Arkansas.

Garland's Texas Brigade in September 1862 was assigned to the defense of the Lower Arkansas River Valley and tasked with the protection of the Fortification at Arkansas Post until they were taken Prisoner during the Battle of Arkansas Post January 11, 1863.
