The regiment left Camp Lubbock on May 30, 1862, and arrived at Camp Clough near Tyler, Texas, on June 20, 1862. He was reported on the June 30, 1862 muster roll as absent, sick since June 23, he subsequently died of disease July 10, the regiment then stationed at Camp Clough.

In the summer of 1862 Gen. Henry E. McCulloch camped at Camp Clough, three miles east of Tyler [Smith County], while preparing his troops for a march to Little Rock. Camp Ford, named for Capt. John S. (Rip) Fordqv, was established four miles northeast of Tyler as a training post. With the help of local women, army physicians established a post hospital at Planter's Hotel.
