Here's a mule mounted cavalryman's story from the Battle of Ashley's Station, Arkansas on August 24,1864. Shelby's Cavalry made an attack on the hay operation at Ashley's Station, after attacking the first fort on the railroad. They moved to form a line of battle on the north side of the railroad track, as they approached the tracks to stop and form a battle line. One of Shelby's cavalrymen mounted on a mule, the mule decided not to stop so he took his rider on a one man charge across the tracks. This one man charge running bucking into the Union ranks so startled the troops that no one fired at him, they just watched in shock as he made a half mile run through their ranks came out the other end crossed the tracks and made an escape and back to his unit.
