Re: Woods' 36th-32nd Texas Cavalry in Louisiana

Not having seen this title in a regimental roster or history, I am curious what did the matron do? Was she a nurse for the regiment or did she have some other specific function? Col Woods was a doctor and was very attentive to the needs of his sick. When traveling he did not like to leave his sick behind, but brought them along in wagons. He felt they would get better care if they stayed with the regiment and he attended them. Does your information give any details? According to Webster, the definition of matron was a married woman usually marked by dignified maturity or social distinction who supervises.
