Re: Co. A Willis Cavalry Wauls Texas Legion

Thanks for your reply...I appreciate your interest...$7.00 extra pay must have been very helpful since Vernon had a wife and 4 kids back home...His unit(Willis Texas Cavalry)was operating near the Mississippi River in March,1863 and helped defend Ft.Pemberton against Union gunboats until about March 16th,when the gunboats pulled back, ending the siege.... There were some casualties inside the fort....several wounded and 1 kia...however,I've always believed he died of disease on that day,but I could be wrong...... he was last paid for extra duty 4 days previously(March 12th) and there was no mention of anything unusual on his payslip....I assume he then went back to regular duty with Co. A....I know he was buried in Warren County,Miss but there is no record of his demise at any cemetery there...so I believe he was buried quickly in an unknown locale with no headstone....Vernon was age 37....I would like to know where he's buried so I can have some closure, and attend to his gravesite....Respectfully,Charlie.
