Re: whitworth rifles

On-or-about June 1, 1865, two 6-pounder Whitworth rifled guns were in position in the Galveston defenses (O.R. v.48, pt.2, p.964). There were also two 12-pounder, and two 18-pounder Blakely rifles, a total of six English guns. Were these the "battery" procured by Ashbel Smith and Gov. Murrah ?

In June, 1863, the "English vessel" ('Sir William Peel'), ". . . carrying six Whitworth guns . . ." was at the mouth of the Rio Grande (O.R. v.26, pt.2, p.88). ". . . it may be advisable to purchase her guns . . ." (O.R., v.26, pt.2, p.96). When later boarded by the U.S. Navy the guns were in fact gone; so, somewhere in Texas.
