Re: TW Smith -10th Texas Calvalry, Co. D 1861-1865

The 10th Cavalry took part in a campaign on the west bank of the Mississippi River durning the seige of Vicksburg. The location was between Lake Providence and Tallulah. One particular battle took place near Transylvania, La. 113 Yankee negro troops held fortifications on top of any Indian mound. I think it was the Julice Mound. I am going to drive over there one day this week and check it out. Sharp shooters picked off a few of the Yankees and then Rebel reinforcements arrived from the south. The Yankees surrendered. Over the next few days 15 of the negro prisoners were killed. The battle and burning of several plantations in the area had little military significance other than making noise for the garrison at Vicksburg to hear. The Texas Cavalry had 4 cannons to make the noise.
