Martha,

All troops west of the Mississippi were a part of the "Trans-Mississippi" army. There is really no such thing as a Trans-Mississippi army or an army using that name. The 5th Texas Partisan Rangers were for most of the war under the ultimate command of E. Kirby Smith, who was the commanding general in the Trans-Mississippi Department.

The 5th Texas Partisan Rangers spent most of their war service in the Indian Territory and the men were primarily recruited from Northeast Texas.
