Wes, Don't know if this will help, but there was a George Elam in Company K, 27th Texas Cavalry Regiment. This unit started with four companies known as the 4th Battalion. They were combined in Arkansas by General McCullogh. Later additions to this Battalion increased the unit to 12 Companies, with all kinds of units. Some Arkansas companies were traded to put all Texas units in this regiment. The independant companies that formed up in Texas and charged off to war were common. This could explain Texans in a Mississippi unit. George was the only Elam in the Whitfield / Ross Texas Brigade.
