Re: Company C 33rd Regiment 5th Texas Calvary

Jerry,
You stated "In July 1863, Fort Smith Arkansas was abandoned by the Confederate army and was occupied by federal forces of Gen. Federick Steele in late August".

The Confederates abandoned Ft Smith on August 31, 1863 and was occupied by federal forces on Sept 1st. The Union forces were under the command of Schofield, not Steele.

You further stated "In October they were moved from Fort Warren to Doaksville in Indian Territory along with 590 men in Lt. Col. Peter C. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry regiment and were placed in Col. R.M. Gano's Texas Brigade of Brig. Gen. William Steele's Division of Indian Territory."

Per the reports of Gen Wm Steele, Hardeman was located near Ft Smith AR with 590 men in the brigade. After Gano's arrival, Wm Steele ordered the brigade to move south via the Butterfield Road (the road from Boggy Depot to Riddle's) and when their uniforms arrived from Bonham he sent them east to Doaksville.
