The Texas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Company C 33rd Regiment 5th Texas Calvary

Jerry,
It was not my intent to drive you from participating on these message boards. However, I clearly have issues with your postings and my most recent post shows my growing frustration to the point of being antagonistic, as does this response.

I could not possibly know for sure whether you "are correct" or not. I can, however, compare what you post to a wide variety of sources such as corroborated reports in the Official Records. We are all relying on second hand information from which we attempt to discern the actual events and use our best judgement as to the reliability of the information.

In 2007, we have access to more sources of information than the best historians of the past. Using these sources, I have found many errors in books and periodicals. Living in Oklahoma, I am abundantly aware of issues such as the misidentification of battlefield locations and the apathy or collusion of some persons in perpetuating such errors.

As you posted information that was new to me, I asked for your sources and generally got no response. I therefore began to research your statements and found, on some occasions, rather extensive information that contradicted your statements. (I also occasionally ran across what I assumed to be your source). I presented this information, citing my sources and in some cases posting the text of the sources on the message boards. You did not respond but continued to post the now questionable information as if it was undisputable fact.

I want you to continue to participate, share your opinions, share information, share your sources, be receptive to other points of view, and learn new information like the rest of us. None of us can post information and go unchallenged if someone has contradictory information from a reliable source.

Sincerely,
Ken Martin
