Re: Units at Galveston at the end of the war

The following list of events may give some insight about the last weeks of the war in the Galveston/Houston area. Although not inclusive of all units, it is probably typical of most. This information has been obtained while researching Liken's 35th Texas Cavalry Regt (dismounted).

May 10, Galveston - Col Ashbel Smith, commanding the defenses of Galveston reported a list of units stationed there. Some of these units had been dispatched to Galveston because of unrest by the coastal artillery garrison. The citizens of the island had been complaining to the military authorities that the soldiers were so poorly supplied, some of them were stealing food, clothes, etc.
May 14, Galveston - Four Hundred troops stationed in Galveston attempted to desert, but Col. Smith, aided by a couple of regiments recently arrived, persuaded them to remain a while longer.
May 21, Galveston - Almost the entire force had been loaded on trains and moved to Houston where other units were stationed.
May 23, Houston - A crowd of some 2000 persons including soldiers, citizens, women, and children sacked the Ordnance Building and Clothing Bureau.
May 24, Houston - Dreading a reign of anarchy by poorly clad, hungry, and unpaid soldiers, military and civilian authorities provided soldiers with transportation to the end of railheads and a promise of an Honorable Discharge if they would leave Houston and start back to their homes.
May 25, Navasota, Texas - John Albert Stevens recieves his discharge from CSA (discharge found in Pension Application) signed by Captain G. E. Warren, commanding Company G, 35th Texas Cavalry Rgt.
May 29, Houston - Gen E. Kirby Smith arrives to take charge of assembled troops only to find the army had disbanded and gone home.
June 2, Galveston - Gen Smith surrendered the Trans-Mississippi Dept, CSA.
July 11, Marshall - Parole of Captain G. E. Warren.
