Glenn,

The 17th Texas spent much of the War campaigning with the 18th Texas Cavalry (Dismounted). The following link, while specifically describing the 18th Texas does mention the 17th Texas and indicates the common movements, actions and fate of the two units:

My GG-Grandmother's brother, John Asa McCrocklin from Blanco Co, Texas answered the call to defend the Confederacy, on March 4, 1862 and enlisted in Darnell's Regiment, in the Cavalry Company commanded by Capt. R. N. Calhoun. The unit mustered in Dallas, Texas and was re-designated as Co F, 18th Texas Cavalry, C.S.A. I have posted a biography of Uncle John Asa at the Blanco Co USGenWeb site shown below.
