9th TX moniker, 9th Cav, 9th Inf, 9th Regt Inf
In Response To: Re: Texas 9th Inf. Co. I ()

Karen McCann Hett,

The military units of Texas with the moniker “9th” were/ are confusing. ..The information below is from pages vIIpA-3 and vIIpA-338 of my 1,022-page book, save the 9th (Nichols') Regiment Texas Infantry (also called the 5th Texas Volunteer Infantry).

Below, I first presented an abbreviated listing then an explanation, albeit brief. ..I invite questions and additional information.

9th Militia Brigade, Texas State Troops
9th Texas Cavalry, CSA
9th Texas Cavalry Partisan Battalion, CSA
9th Texas Infantry, CSA
9th (Nichols') Regiment Texas Infantry (also called the 5th Texas Volunteer Infantry).

Editor’s note: ..Ironically, to further confuse the “9th” moniker, on Feb. 6, 1863 the “5th Partisan Rangers” was formed from the “10th Texas Cavalry” and the “9th Texas Cavalry Battalion Partisans.”

9th Militia Brigade, Texas State Troops, recruited from Hopkins and Lamar Counties.

9th Texas Cavalry organized at Camp Reeves, near Sherman, Grayson County, Texas on Oct. 2, 1861 then mustered into Confederacy on Oct. 14, 1861 recruited from Davis (now Cass), Fannin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Lamar, Red River, Tarrant, and Titus Counties.

9th Texas Cavalry Partisan Battalion, Confederate (commanded by John L. Randolph). ..Editor’s note: J.L. Randolph is mentioned on 18 pages - most entries are from handwritten records - of my 1,022-page book.

9th Texas Infantry mustered into the Confederacy on Dec. 1, 1861 recruited from Collin, Fannin, Grayson, Hopkins, Lamar, Red River, and Titus Counties.

9th (Nichols') Regiment Texas Infantry (also called the 5th Texas Volunteer Infantry) recruited from primarily Montgomery and Walker Counties.

Karen McCann Hett: ... Congratulations on constructing an informative well-designed website. ..Your contributions certainly help in making sense of the Texas records under the guise of the “9th Texas”.

Again, any corrections and questions are invited.
