The military units of Texas with the moniker “9th” were/ are confusing. ..The information below is from pages vIIpA-3 and vIIpA-338 of my 1,022-page book, save the 9th (Nichols') Regiment Texas Infantry (also called the 5th Texas Volunteer Infantry).
Below, I first presented an abbreviated listing then an explanation, albeit brief. ..I invite questions and additional information.
9th Militia Brigade, Texas State Troops
9th Texas Cavalry, CSA
9th Texas Cavalry Partisan Battalion, CSA
9th Texas Infantry, CSA
9th Regiment Texas Infantry, organized by E.B. Nichols (also called the 5th Texas Volunteer Infantry).
Editor’s note: ..Ironically, to further confuse the “9th” moniker, on Feb. 6, 1863 the “5th Partisan Rangers” was formed from the “10th Texas Cavalry” and the “9th Texas Cavalry Battalion Partisans.”

9th Regiment, Texas Infantry (Nichols') (6 months, 1861-62) 9th (Nichol's) Infantry Regiment [also called 5th Regiment] was formed during the summer of 1861. Some of the men were from Galveston and La Grange. This was a six month command that served in the Department of Texas at Galveston. It was mustered out of service in March, 1862, but many of its members enlisted in Waul's Texas Legion. The field officers were Colonel E. B. Nichols, Lieutenant Colonel Josiah C. Massie, and Major Fred. Tate.
