Pittman murdered ?; an Indictment of Col. Bourland
In Response To: Daniel (D H) Moore ()

Earl Pittman,

Please help identify the “Pittman” mentioned 8 times in an 8-page October 15, 1864 indictment of Col. James Bourland that lists 27 men of Bourland’s Regiment. ..One “Cpl. John A. Pittman, b-1841,” was mustered into Capt. J. McCoole’s Militia of Grayson Co TX.” ..One “John Pittman” signed a Jul 1863 Hopkins Co TX petition.

Some careless historians have published that five (5) of Bourland’s captains signed this indictment even though all 8 pages, including the signatures, are in the same handwriting.

This rough draft, by an unknown writer, was outright slander, but some historians have cited it as credible. ....This would-be “bill of particulars,” was never filed in a criminal court, a civil court, nor a military court. ..There is no evidence that a court martial was ever held, but it is known that Col. James Bourland signed the Jun 2, 1865 Confederate surrender in Galveston as a representative of the Northern Sub-District of Texas.

The above is from vIpp287-280 of my 1022-page book that is 70% from handwritten records.
