My great grandfather, Cpl William M White of Company E, 17th Texas, was also captured at Fort DeRussy. Their is an excellent 1st hand account of that battle in a book titled TEXANS IN GRAY A Regimental History of the Civil War. The book is based on the accounts by Sgt John C. Porter, Col. Thos. G. Bonner and Col William Ochiltree of the 18th Texas Infantry. There is even a map of the fortifications, details of the attack and surrender, the names of the gunboats on which the prisoners traveled to New Orleans,their daily life in the prison (Cotton Compress #4 as I recall), their exchange, etc. You can visit the site of Ft DeRussy (near Marksville) and still see some of the works. The book also covers a good deal more of the campaigns of Walker's Texas Division. Another note..my grandfather trained at Camp Groce (Plantation Liendo)and from this book it seems that the division ended the war back at Camp Groce.
