Was not the 10th Cav Regt a WBTS Union Regt, later made into the famous all black "Buffalo Soldiers" Regt that served on the frontier (a young Lt. later to become famous in another war got his name of "Black Jack" Pershing as one of the white officers of that Regt)... I believe that unit also won distinction in the Spanish-American War when it was attached to Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders volunteer Regt.

You might also try and see if there's a 4th Div web site that might give you a bit more info from their RVN era history.
