Demsey J. Burton, Burnett's 13th Texas Cavalry
In Response To: Re: 13th Texas Cavalry ()

Jimmy Burns,
.
Please be realistic. ..Mike G. Thompson has found your guy, "Demsey James Burton."
.
Since I transcribed a 23-inch stack of handwritten Civil War era records for my 1,022 book (70 % of which was from handwritten records), I would bet that Mike is on-point.
.
The better question is: Did the OFFICIAL RECORDS crew transcribe "Dempsey" correctly? ..I guarantee that you could not discern the difference in the handwritten "Burton and Button", so please investigate before you throw cold water on Mike's generous answer. ..He didn't have to expend the effort to find this info. for you.
.
Transcriptions of field notes is very difficult despite what the "celebrated" Shelby Foote said in a 3-hour C-SPAN interview: "No footnotes are necessary since all accounts of the Civil War are understood." ..Balderdash!
.
That may be true for the study of the Civil War era in Virginia but it is not true for the Trans-Mississippi Department.
.
The first step in writing history is to transcribe records then hope readers will rub out the wrinkles. ... Readers are helping me rub out wrinkles of my transcriptins, slowly but surely. ...Yes, I am one of the few who has embarked upon transcribing, interpreting, and indexing the hundreds of pages of handwritten crumbling North Texas records.
.

M.G. Thompsom posting:
There is a Dempsey J. Button listed as a private in the 13th Texas Cavalry Company C. Could be a typo.
