Re: Pvt. Francis Marion Dodson,17th Texas Cav.

Glenn,

Do you know anything more about Francis? I am wondering if all three of the men below are the same man. The first F. M. Dodson may have served for a short time with the 3rd Texas Cavalry then joined the 17th Texas Cavalry. After the surrender of the captured troops of the battle of Arkansas Post the men of the 17th Texas Cavalry that did not get captured went on to form the 17th Texas Consolidated Dismounted Cavalry and fought with Polignac's Texas Brigade in Louisiana.

THIRD TEXAS CAVALRY. Col. Elkanah B. Greer mustered the Third Texas Cavalry Regiment into Confederate service at Dallas on June 13, 1861. The original unit consisted of 1,094 officers and men recruited principally from a dozen counties of Northeast Texas: Cass, Cherokee, Harrison, Hunt, Kaufman, Marion, Rusk, San Augustine, Shelby, Smith, Upshur, and Wood. With Lt. Col. Walter P. Lane as second in command, George W. Chilton as major, and Capt. Mathew D. Ector as adjutant, Greer led the ten companies north across Indian Territory to join Brig. Gen. Benjamin McCulloch's forces near Springfield in July 1861. The unit was the first regiment of Texas volunteers to serve outside the state. Greer's troops participated in the Confederate victories at Wilson's Creek, Missouri, on August 10, 1861, and Chustenahlah, Indian Territory, on December 26, 1861. They were present but not engaged on March 7-8, 1862, at Pea Ridge, Arkansas, where McCulloch lost his life. The unit, which had been consolidated with Sterling Price's command before Pea Ridge and absorbed into the army of Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn, was transferred to Corinth, Mississippi, in the spring of 1862. In the fever-ridden campgrounds around Corinth, forty-three troopers from the Third Texas died from the effects of epidemic disease. An additional 200 officers and men were discharged as disabled, over age, or under age in the course of the general reorganization of the Confederate Army on May 20, 1862. Nevertheless, the regiment played a significant role in Gen. Pierre G. T. Beauregard's successful evacuation of Corinth on the night of May 29-30, 1862.

Glenn, as you can see above some men of the 3rd were discharged in early 1862. I wonder if Frances was one of them ?

The 17th Texas Cavalry Regiment organized in early 1862 and was dismounted in April 1862.

First Commander - Colonel George F. Moore

Surrendered at Arkansas Post on Jan. 11, 1863. Exchanged in April 1863. The exchanged troops were consolidated with other cavalry and infantry troops and sent East of the Mississippi to fight.

Again, the men of the 17th Texas Cavalry that did not get captured at Arkansas Post fought West of the Mississippi with Polignac's Brigade.

Only taking a look at the records will help on this one.

If it turns out that he did fight with Polignac's Brigade then you may want to read Polignac's Brigade by Alwyn Barr a great little book.

Thanks,
Gary D. Bray
