Re: Confederate detached service

Many people who served the Confederacy will not be found by seeking info from the U.S. Archives. Plus they are extremely slow and it seems at times they really don't give a hoot. Call them on a Friday and get your own opinion. Many people who served in the various entities of the Confederacy are not listed in some of the more mainstream things like the Compiled Muster Rolls. There are available other groups of microfilms that might be helpful. There are a series of microfilms that are devoted to Confederate General and General Staff Soldiers. This includes many people who were staff officers, paymasters, drillmasters, nurses, surgeons, and etcetra. Another group of microfilms are ( i am paraphrasing ) troops who were raised by the Confederate Govt. rather than state organizations. For instance if one were a member of the 1st Tex. Arty. and were later combined as a unit say the 1st Confederate Arty Batt. they are not listed in the Compiled Muster rolls by the state name. The third group of muster rolls which one can view are called something like Unfiled papers and Slips. This essentially is a large grouping of info that had time and money been available would have been included in the Compiled Muster Rolls. These groups of Microfilms are a wealth of information and will make sure that one who is interested has some other good avenues for research. If I remember correctly there are either 2 or 3 microfilms pertaining to the Nitre and Mining group. If you have a Latter Days Saints Library near you go there and they can help you find the microfilms which are rented for about $3.50 for 30 days. These microfilms are generally listed in alphabetical order and don't be shy about trying different spellings or whatever. Good Luck in your research and if I can be of help let me know. Charlie Peal
PS. I was lucky enough to find 2 GGGrandfathers in the same unit who had been Conscripted on the same microfilm.
