I apologize for the delay in posting this response! Your husband's ancestor was indeed a member of Company H of the 28th Texas Cavalry. The 28th Texas was dismounted in the fall of 1862 and served for the rest of the war as a "dismounted cavalry" unit--in other words, they acted as an infantry unit. The regiment served in Walker's Texas Division during the war with their primary combat action occurring during the Red River campaign in the spring of 1864. According to my records, Ebby D. Radford was a resident of Freestone County, Texas, in 1860; in the 1860 census he is listed as 16 years old. He enlisted on March 20, 1862 in Freestone County. According to the 10 May 1864 issue of the Galveston Weekly News, Private Radford was wounded slightly in the leg at either the battle of Mansfield (Louisiana) on 8 April 1864 or the battle of Pleasant Hill (Louisiana)on the next day. The casualty list printed in the newspaper combined the casualties for the two battles so it is not possible to determine which of the two battles he was wounded at. Radford is listed in the back of my book in the list of casualties for the regiment.Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for providing me with Radford's first name.
