I've dug up a bit about him including some details about his duel with another California legislator (the last in the state's history). He was a volunteer officer during the capture of the Morning Light and Velocity (Fairy) off Sabine Pass in January of 1863. He was accused to serious boozing, but beat the wrap. He captured the Federal steamer Ark along the Rio Grande.
