Thanks. In the October '07 issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine is a short feature on the restoration of Ft. Chadbourne, which includes a photo of a troopers name scratched into one of the sandstone blocks that were a primary building material. It reads "Albert Haneman Oct. 18, 1858 Co. B 2 (almost looks like a 5) Cav."

According to Jerry Ponder's book on Fort Mason, Albert Haneman(us) was indeed in Co. B of the 2nd. Soldiers and Sailors System lists him in the 17th Cav. and 6th Inf. (Texas)during the War. Census of 1870 has him in/near Bryan as a married farmer (one child) and a native of Paxwinder, which I have not been able to locate. (Google never heard of it.) His widow and several children appear in the 1880 census.

An interesting glimpse into the 19th Century frontier and Civil War military experience.
