Per my husband's family records, 36 men were killed by Bushwhackers near Austin, Texas in 1863. Twenty-five of these men were hanged over the mouth of a saltpeter cave; the ropes were cut and the bodies dropped into the cave. Mrs. John T. Malone’s father, Henry Flaugher (1806-1863), was one of the victims. The bodies were kept in perfect condition; and, through the influence of a man in whose home Mrs. John T. Malone lived while teaching school prior to her marriage, the bodies were removed and given a decent burial. Where can I find additional information regarding bushwhackers in the Austin area?
