Thanks for that additional information. I've done research in 1850 and 1860 census records and occasionally come across military posts when the census taker recorded the soldiers. There is a significant portion of the Army that is made up of 1st generation Americans recorded in those records. The same is true for the most part in post CW America-- at least for the records that I've stumbled across.

I'm fascinated that Albert Haneman, as a member of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry with probably no prior Texas connection, decided to stay in Texas and fight for the Confederacy. Twiggs' surrender in San Antonio in early 1861 is usually viewed by historians as an attempt to provide the South with access to the arms in the arsenal. What is rarely discussed is the likelyhood that 2nd Cav. troopers would stay and fight as well since most of them had been recruited 'back east.'
