Re: 17 Texas Cavalry, Co K

Can you send me the details of the book on the vetrens of the 17th/18th Dismounted Cav. My GR-Grandfather was James Curtis Cady who was a Sergt in the 17th.

He always told family he was a Texas Ranger and fought in the Civil War. He actually joined the 1st Texas Mounted Rifles from April 1861 to April 1862, one of the first CSA units. He may have been a Volunteer Militia before that, these units were often referred to as Rangers. When the 1st disbanded he joined the 17th and served in that unit throught out the war.
Most of the 1st volunteers joined the 8th Cav. who referred to their unit as Texas Rangers. When the 17th was Consolidated in 1863 with the 18th, 24th and 25th, most did not like it. When a change was made to split the 17th/18th the new battle flag, listed the many battles the unit was in. Up to the Battle of Atlanta where much of the unit was captured. I would like to know more.
In the 1890 Vets Census JC was in New Mexico, two others from the 18th and an Capt from the 25th lived near by. So it seems he had his support group.
