James M. McCaffrey--This Band of Heroes;pg.175--- "Not all the men in the regiments which comprised Granbury's Texas Brigrade actually ever served under General Granbury. For instance, even though almost five thousand men from these regiments were captured at Arkansas Post in January 1863,there were several hundred who were not. Some were absent on sick furlough.some were detached on temporary duty with other units, and few escaped from the Post amid all the confusion surrounding the surrender. Some of these "refugees" were temporarrily attached to the 14th Texas Infantry Regiment. Then in the spring of 1863,these men and most of the others who had avoided capture were formed into the 17th Consolidated Regiment of Texas Cavalry(Dismounted). This regiment eventually became a part of General Camille J. Polignac's Brigade and fought with distinction in the Trans-Mississippi Department."
