There is some confusion about this.Dowling and his men were involved in operating guns along the waterfront. In fact, the newspaper in Houston the next day made a comment about them that was something like: "The Irish boys did better than anybody had a right to expect of them." When I published my book on the Battle of Galveston, I was under the impression that many of them also participated in the wading charge against Kuhn's Wharf. It was, in fact, led by Col. Cook, who was the Colonel of the artillery body (Cook's heavy Artillery) to which the Guards belonged. Since the publication of the book, however, I have taken a closer look at some of the source material and my ccurrent opinion is that relatively few of the Guards actually participated in that charge. Instead, I believe that they remained in position and tended their artillery pieces during the charge. In fact, they may well have been the company that moved a gun out onto an adjacent wharf and fired for a brief time at Kuhn's wharf from a flanking position. But I agree with you that the battle reports do not answer the question of what precisely this group did during the battle and we may never know who did what.
