He's not recorded as a prisoner-of-war.

Also, there's no mention of an action in that part of Mississippi in early December. If a battle had been involved, the record would read something like, 'missing, assumed dead' or 'missing, assumed prisoner'. Rocky Ford is simply listed as the place where this man disappeared, not the site of contact with the enemy.
