One of the messmates name was John Brown another was J. Keen both are in the 22nd Texas Infantry. According to Herod family history, Newton was 16 when he enlisted, but being young he was put to camp chores. There was a Corp. Joseph Herod in the 22nd also I believe he could have been Newton's brother. His father's name was Joseph also. I also found the other Herod's but don't have anything on them. There are no papers in the Nat. Archives but he was granted a Texas Pension. He is also in a Houston County History book as being in the 22nd Infantry, but on his pension papers he said he was in the 22nd Cavalry.
